Your doctor will examine you and do tests regularly to see how well your treatment with Gleevec is working. Any of the following tests may be used to track the effect of treatment on your response to treatment. Doctors use the tests to check the location and size of tumors.
- X-rays—Two-dimensional pictures of parts of the body taken using small amounts of radiation
- Computerized tomography (CT) scans—Very sensitive cross-sectional pictures of parts of the body taken with small amounts of radiation
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans—Very sensitive three-dimensional pictures of parts of the body taken using magnetic fields
- Positron emission tomography (PET) scans—Three-dimensional images of parts of the body in which areas of growing tissue “light up”
It is important to go to all of your follow-up appointments and tests. Talking about the results of your tests with your doctor can help you feel more in control during your treatment. Talk to your doctor about the goals of your treatment and how soon you should expect to see a response.
To get the most from treatment, it is very important to stay on Gleevec and take it exactly as your doctor directs. Let your doctor or nurse know if you are having any problems with or concerns about your treatment.
