What to Expect

The main goal of Gleevec® treatment for people with Kit + GIST is to shrink the size of the tumor. Different people respond differently to Gleevec therapy. How you respond to treatment will depend on many factors, but your doctor has prescribed Gleevec for you because he or she believes it is the right treatment for you. For Gleevec to work, it is important that you continue to take it as prescribed unless your doctor tells you to stop treatment or changes your dose.

Gleevec may cause side effects. A majority of patients experience side effects at some time. In clinical trials, most patients (95%) continued treatment despite side effects. Most side effects of Gleevec are mild to moderate in severity. Common side effects you may experience include fluid retention, diarrhea, nausea, fatigue, muscle cramps, abdominal pain, and rash. Be sure to tell your doctor and nurse if you have any side effects during your treatment with Gleevec. They can give you advice to help you manage the side effects. See Side Effects and Safety Information for more.
